Over the past few years, we have had a lot of couples ask us wether or not an engagement session is really important. Our short answer is YES! VERY IMPORTANT! Now let me go into a detailed explanation… Here are 4 major reasons you must consider having engagement photos taken prior to the wedding day.

Having an Engagement Session prepares you for the wedding day.

This is the biggest reason why. Most couples are incredibly nervous to be put on the spot in front of the camera and are unsure of how to pose in front of the camera. That nervousness can sometimes show up in the images. The most important thing about preparing for the big day is learning how to relax in front of the camera. Consider you engagement session like a lesson in how to pose and how to get comfortable. It’s our job to make you as relaxed and as natural as possible. Most of our couple’s start out a bit shy to have their photos taken for the first time. But because we spend a few hours having the engagement session you guys are ready to roll like pros on the wedding day. And it always makes a huge difference in your wedding photos.

Heirloom Imagery with lots of use

During your engagement session I shoot both digital and film. My film is sent out to Richard Photo lab for processing and scanning. Having professional images shot on film is like an art piece. Printing this is so imperative to completing the process from the time you hire your photographer to after you receive your gallery. These beautiful heirlooms will get you even more excited about the wedding day. There is so much more you can do with these images that make them even more of an important keepsake. Chances are you are going to use the images for to create your save the dates, frame them for your home, wedding website, gift them for families, use them for guest sign in books and post them to social media. Having engagement photos also makes for such a great holiday card send out to friends and families during the holiday season.

Time to connect

Getting engaged is the best time of your life but it can also be the busiest time. With planning a wedding and all the parties and dinners life can get hectic. An engagement session will allow you to get out in nature, snuggle up and get lovey with one another. It’s sort of like a mini moment of celebrating the two of you in love and the life you are about to embark on. It is one of the moments you can slow down and honor your engagement or promise to one another. It’s such a fun day with lots of kissing and hugging allowing you both to relax and connect.

You will get to know your photographer

We build Blue Note Weddings on relationships. Our couples and their stories are important to us. It’s very important to me as your photographer that we meet, talk prior to the wedding day and also make sure we work well together. When you have your engagement session you will get to know my cues and how I work. I also get very excited when I see golden moments so you may here me go “oh my god you guys!!!…”
Your photo and video team are going to be the people you will see the most on the wedding day so establishing a relationship prior to the wedding day is going to make you feel comfortable and at ease. Ultimately this is what creates beautiful imagery. It is important to choose your wedding photographer and videographer carefully based on their ability to create the imagery you appreciate and if you feel comfortable with them and not just the costs.

Engagement session costs

While most photographers offer engagement sessions in their packages some do not. Sometimes there are additional costs for engagement sessions however I find the value of engagement sessions and images to be invaluable and a wonderful add on in some of our packages. So if your photographer is offering one included in packages then in our opinion its a fabulous deal!
